These are testing times for all of us. We should reflect on the struggles of our Beloved (ﷺ) who went through many hardships, yet here we are still conveying the Blessed message.

Surah Ash-Sharh is also referred to as Al-Inshirah and is the 94th Surah of the Qur’an. The English meaning of this Surah is “Solace” or “Comfort” and is composed of 8 ayats (verses). It is classified as a Meccan Surah meaning its revelation was before Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) had migrated from Mecca to Medina.

This surah was revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to console and encourage Him (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) had to bear the brunt of the criticism and abuse when Islam was first revealed to Him (ﷺ) since people thought of Him (ﷺ) crazy. He (ﷺ) was openly mocked in the streets as no one in Mecca was receptive to his message. Although he gradually became accustomed to this ridicule, He (ﷺ) faced a lot of hardship and the message of this Surah, Allah declares beautifully, “Indeed, along with every hardship comes ease” (verse 5), and He repeats it to emphasize the message. Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)], your breast?

And We removed from you your burden

Which had weighed upon your back

And raised high for you your repute.

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].

And to your Lord direct [your] longing.
